So You Wanna Brand Yourself?
Alright, glitterchild. You’ve got ideas, a vibe, a whole damn personality, and now the internet wants you to smoosh all of that into a website with a logo, a couple of fonts, and a color scheme that works on both desktop and mobile?
Cool cool cool. Not stressful at all.
Branding yourself isn’t just “what colors look good together” or “should I use a serif or sans-serif font.” It’s who the hell am I, visually. It’s what part of my soul do I sell first. And if you’re a creative person with feelings (hi), this can get… complicated.
But don’t worry. I’ve been there. I’m still there. Let’s talk about how to do this without losing your actual mind (or giving up and using Papyrus, God forbid).
Step 1: You’re the Brand, Babe
Like it or not, you’re the face. The product. The energy.
People don’t follow “brands” anymore. They follow vibes. And your vibe? That’s your superpower. Whether you’re moody and mysterious or neon and chaotic, your brand starts with you. Your humor. Your hot takes. Your trauma. Your taste.
That doesn’t mean you have to share every private detail. It just means your brand should feel like you. If you’re all heart and glitter with a little bite, lean into that. Be honest. Be weird. Be the version of you that you love the most.
Step 2: Find Your Vibe (And Commit)
“I just want it to look cool.”
Yeah… that’s not enough.
Try this instead:
Make a mood board of outfits, art, movie stills, Tumblr posts, chaos screenshots from your Notes app
Write down words that describe your energy (and not just “authentic” or “bold”—I mean stuff like sizzling, nostalgic, cursed-but-cute)
Picture your brand as a person or a place—what are they wearing? What music is playing? What’s the lighting?
The clearer your vision, the easier it’ll be to build visuals that make sense.
Step 3: Fonts Are Emotional Support
Picking fonts is like dating. You’ll flirt with 20, commit to 3, and end up with 1 that doesn’t crash your entire site.
A good rule of thumb:
One main font that reflects your vibe (but you can actually read)
One for body text (don’t be a menace)
Maybe a funky accent one for headers if you’re feeling bold
Avoid anything too curly, too narrow, or too 2007. If it feels like it belongs in a Twilight fan edit, swipe left.
Step 4: Color Is a Love Language
Color can do so much. It can scream, soothe, seduce, or say “please hire me I promise I’m stable.”
Don’t just pick your favorite colors. Think about:
What emotions your brand triggers
What your audience will respond to
How the colors work in light mode, dark mode, print, merch, social, all of it
Hot tip: Start with photos or art that speak to you, then pull colors from there using a palette generator. If you wouldn’t wear it or post it, don’t make it your brand.
Step 5: Logo Therapy
Your logo doesn’t need to be fancy. It just needs to be you.
Honestly? Sometimes your name in a cool font is enough. Sometimes you want a whole visual mark with symbols and flair. Either way:
Keep it clean and scalable
Make sure it works in black and white too
Don’t overthink it to the point of despair
Your logo is the stamp. Your brand is the vibe. One is a tool. The other is a whole mood.
Step 6: Talk Like a Human
Brand voice matters. Whether it’s your website, social captions, or emails, people want to hear you. Not a press release. Not some “on-brand” lifeless paragraph.
You don’t have to be funny or edgy if that’s not your thing—but be real. Be consistent. Be the kind of person people want to hang out with, or learn from, or root for.
If you’re awkward, own it. If you’re fire and sass with glitter on top? Turn it up.
Final Thought: The Sparkle Test
When in doubt, ask yourself:
“If I burned it all down and started over, what part of this would I keep?”
That’s your brand, right there. That’s your sparkle.
Branding is never really done. It’ll evolve, just like you. And yeah, you might question everything during the process (especially around 2 AM when you hate all your fonts), but it’s worth it.
Because once it clicks?
Once your outside matches your inside?
Once your colors and your content and your energy all feel like home?
That’s magic.
